Healthwatch Somerset carried out an enter and view visit to Carrington House Residential Home in Wincanton on 7 July 2015 to understand residents’ experiences of living in the home and accessing health and social care services. The home accommodated 31 residents at the time of the visit. Healthwatch spoke with residents and staff during the visit, although the report did not specify the total number of people interviewed.
The visit found that residents were generally happy with the care they received and felt well supported by staff, who were observed treating people with dignity, kindness and respect. Healthwatch highlighted good access to GPs, district nurses and other healthcare services, strong links with local schools and community groups, and a varied programme of activities including evening and weekend events. Residents valued opportunities to remain independent, and the home was praised for supporting community involvement and respite care.
Some areas for improvement were identified. Two residents reported feeling bored and wanting more activities, particularly activities that appealed to men. Healthwatch also noted a lack of hearing loop facilities and concerns that some residents with hearing loss were becoming isolated during conversations. The home reported ongoing difficulties with delayed social care reviews, slow responses from safeguarding services, and problems relating to hospital discharge arrangements, including residents returning from hospital without adequate information or support.
Healthwatch concluded that Carrington House provided a positive and caring environment with many examples of good practice. Recommendations included improving support for residents with hearing loss, individualising bedroom areas for people living with dementia, expanding activity options, strengthening transport opportunities for residents, and continuing to raise concerns with health and social care services about hospital discharge processes and delayed care reviews.
