Healthwatch Coventry undertook research on tenants’ experiences of moving to new accommodation following the closure of four Housing with Care schemes in the city. The study followed residents through the transition process from notification of the closures to settling into their new homes. Healthwatch conducted a series of interviews with 17 tenants, representing 22% of the 78 residents affected by the closures.
The research found that most residents did not want to move and experienced anxiety, uncertainty and distress about leaving homes where many had lived for years. Common concerns included the location and cost of new accommodation, loss of established relationships, adapting to unfamiliar surroundings, and maintaining cultural or dietary needs. While most tenants felt they had some choice and control over decisions, many said they would have benefited from more written information, clearer communication about timelines and options, and greater support in identifying suitable alternative accommodation.
Most participants felt the practical aspects of the move were handled well. The removal service was highly praised, and staff at the housing schemes were often described as supportive and empathetic. However, Healthwatch identified problems with communication, delays in assessments, inconsistent information about grants and available housing options, and gaps in care planning for some residents with higher support needs. Some tenants experienced difficulties after moving, including issues with support arrangements, equipment provision and adapting to new environments.
Healthwatch concluded that although the overall transition was managed reasonably successfully and most tenants were content in their new homes, important lessons could be learned for future service changes. Recommendations included providing information both verbally and in writing, shortening assessment timescales, improving care planning and follow-up reviews, strengthening communication processes, and ensuring tenants have better access to detailed information about alternative accommodation before making decisions.
