Summary of report content

Healthwatch Cheshire undertook an enter and view visit to Vale Court Care Home, Ellesmere Port, on 7 September 2026.

The visit found that Vale Court provided a caring, friendly and person-centred environment for residents. The home, which provides nursing, dementia and respite care, was observed to be clean, welcoming and undergoing a programme of refurbishment. Healthwatch reviewed feedback from three relatives and observed positive interactions between staff and residents, with staff demonstrating compassion, attentiveness and a good understanding of residents’ individual needs. Residents also benefited from strong links with local healthcare services, including GP support, Hospital at Home services and a range of visiting health professionals.

The report identified several areas of good practice, including comprehensive care planning, effective communication with families, a varied programme of activities and minimal reliance on agency staff. Residents were supported to maintain links with family and the local community, and the home had recently invested in improvements to communal and outdoor spaces. However, a small number of relatives raised concerns about personal hygiene, communication, staffing levels, privacy and dignity, and the quality of some aspects of personal care.

Healthwatch Cheshire concluded that Vale Court provided a safe and supportive environment with many positive features. Recommendations included providing additional staff reminders and training on dignity and privacy, improving communication through the use of information boards, developing stronger links with the wider community, exploring opportunities for volunteer involvement, and displaying more residents’ artwork throughout the home.
