Summary of report content

Healthwatch Surrey undertook research on people’s experiences of health and social care services across Surrey. The May 2025 insight bulletin is based on feedback from 118 people received through Healthwatch Surrey’s helpdesk and community engagement activities between February and March 2025. Most feedback related to GP practices (39%) and hospitals (32%), and 82% of respondents who shared their age were over 50.

The report found that experiences of GP services were mixed. While many people praised responsive practices, caring staff and well-coordinated care between GPs, hospitals, specialists and pharmacies, others felt dismissed or not listened to when seeking support. Concerns were also raised about access to appropriate care for people experiencing mental health crises and about failures to meet the communication needs of deaf patients.

Access to NHS dentistry remained a significant concern. Residents reported difficulties affording treatment, uncertainty about eligibility for financial support and challenges accessing NHS dental services. Some people also described poor past experiences of dental care that had resulted in lasting anxiety about receiving treatment.

The report also highlighted concerns about hospital waiting times and a lack of communication regarding delays, test results and follow-up appointments. Many people reported stress and uncertainty caused by long waits and difficulties obtaining updates about their care. Overall, the bulletin emphasised the importance of coordinated care, good communication, accessible services and keeping patients informed while they wait for treatment.
