Summary of report content

Healthwatch Southwark undertook research on the experiences of the Gypsy and Traveller community in accessing health and social care services. They spoke to 10 Traveller women living in Southwark through focus groups held across local Traveller sites and supported by Southwark Travellers’ Action Group. The research explored access to GP services, how people find information, experiences of health and social care pathways, and the cultural needs of the community.

Participants said they preferred to receive information face to face, particularly through trusted organisations such as Southwark Travellers’ Action Group, and highlighted low literacy levels among some older Travellers as a barrier to written communication. Many reported difficulties obtaining GP appointments, long waits to see their preferred doctor and concerns that doctors appeared rushed or did not always listen to them. Pharmacy services were widely valued and often used before seeking help from a GP, while many participants reported going directly to A&E if they could not get a timely appointment.

Trust, respect and continuity of care were important themes throughout the discussions. Women generally preferred to see female healthcare professionals for their own health needs and valued seeing the same professionals over time. Participants felt communication between GPs and hospitals was often good, but raised concerns about maternity discharge, believing women were sometimes discharged too early after giving birth. They also identified the loss of a dedicated Traveller health visitor service as a significant gap in support for families.

The report found that family plays a central role in caring for older relatives, with care homes rarely considered as an option. Mental health, sexual health and substance misuse remained sensitive topics within the community, although participants felt attitudes towards discussing mental health were beginning to change. Healthwatch Southwark concluded that better communication, stronger relationships with trusted professionals, improved awareness of services and continued engagement with Traveller communities would help improve access to health and social care services.
