Summary of report content

Healthwatch Suffolk undertook research on experiences of dermatology services in Suffolk. They spoke to 58 people who had consulted a health professional about a dermatology condition in the previous 12 months. Most respondents initially contacted their GP surgery, and 37 were referred to hospital dermatology services.

Many respondents reported positive experiences, particularly when referrals were made quickly, appointments were arranged promptly and staff were kind, professional and reassuring. Twenty-one respondents described a good experience, with praise for dermatology specialists, clear communication and effective treatment. Most people who commented on waiting times said they were seen within four months, and some reported being seen within weeks through urgent referral pathways.

However, a significant minority reported poor experiences relating to delays, communication and access to treatment. Some described long waits, cancelled appointments, worsening symptoms and negative impacts on their mental health while waiting for specialist care. Others felt they were not listened to, received inadequate advice or were told that treatment was not available on the NHS and would require private care. Seventeen respondents described their overall experience as poor, and sixteen gave one- or two-star ratings for their care.

Healthwatch Suffolk concluded that experiences were most positive when people could access appropriate professionals quickly, were referred to dermatology without delay and received clear follow-up and compassionate care. Experiences were less positive when access to GP appointments was difficult, referrals were delayed, communication was poor or people felt they were being directed towards private treatment because NHS options were unavailable.
