Summary of report content

Healthwatch North East Lincolnshire undertook research on views about proposed Neighbourhood Health Centres. They spoke to 54 people through surveys completed at 17 community venues and online. Most respondents supported the concept and identified a wide range of services they would like to see delivered closer to home, with mental health support, GP services, blood testing, walk-in appointments, NHS dentistry, addiction support and community social groups among the most frequently requested features.

Transport was identified as the biggest barrier to accessing healthcare, with over half of respondents highlighting difficulties related to bus services, travel distances and parking. Other commonly reported barriers included difficulties booking appointments, long telephone queues, lack of clear information, accessibility challenges, poor experiences with staff communication and complex referral processes. Many respondents also emphasised the importance of continuity of care and being able to see the same healthcare professional regularly.

People felt centres should have friendly and welcoming staff, a relaxed and non-clinical atmosphere, comfortable seating and sensory-friendly spaces for people with autism, learning disabilities and sensory sensitivities. Accessibility was a major priority, with respondents calling for wheelchair access, lifts, changing facilities and information available in a range of formats and languages. Many also wanted social and community facilities, including cafés, coffee mornings, activity groups and opportunities to reduce loneliness and isolation.

The report concluded that local people were broadly supportive of Neighbourhood Health Centres and saw them as an opportunity to improve access to healthcare and community support. Key priorities included better transport links, easier access to appointments, clearer information, inclusive design, strong mental health provision and a welcoming environment that combines healthcare services with social and community resources.
