Healthwatch Northamptonshire undertook an Enter and View visit to Bell Lodge, Byfield on 8 June 2018.
The visit found that the home provided a warm, welcoming and homely environment with strong links to the local community. Residents appeared well cared for and relaxed, and relationships between staff, residents and visitors were observed to be friendly and respectful. Relatives spoke very positively about the home, particularly the individualised care provided and the support given to people with dementia and those with challenging behaviours.
The home offered a varied programme of activities including music sessions, exercise, arts and crafts, reminiscence groups, visits from a therapy dog, religious services and community events such as summer barbecues. Food and drink provision was tailored to residents' individual needs and preferences, with a choice of meals available and snacks and refreshments offered throughout the day. Residents were encouraged to participate in activities and were welcoming towards visitors.
Healthwatch Northamptonshire concluded that Bell Lodge provided a positive and caring environment with many examples of good practice. The only suggestion for improvement raised during the visit was the possible addition of a wet room, although relatives acknowledged the associated cost and were otherwise highly satisfied with the care provided. The report noted the home's intimate atmosphere, strong community involvement and consistently positive feedback from residents, relatives and visitors.
