Summary of report content

Healthwatch Bolton undertook an Enter and View visit to Glenbank Care Home on 25 April 2016.

The visit found that the home provided a clean, welcoming and homely environment with extensive gardens, quiet communal spaces and a calm atmosphere. Residents generally appeared well cared for, were clean and well presented, and staff were observed interacting with them in a friendly, respectful and supportive manner. Residents spoke positively about feeling safe, the quality of their personal care and the food provided, while a visitor described the standard of care and staff commitment very positively.

Residents were supported to make choices about daily life, meals and activities, and the home offered a range of recreational opportunities including craft sessions, exercise classes, trips out, games and church visits. Staff reported good relationships with residents and said they had time to listen and talk with them. However, feedback on whether individual needs were fully catered for was mixed, with some residents feeling the home could do more to support personal preferences and meaningful activities.

Healthwatch Bolton concluded that the home was operating to a very good standard with regard to dignity and respect. Recommendations included improving how correspondence relating to residents with dementia is managed, considering how individual care needs could be better met and continuing to develop staff skills through training. The provider responded by outlining its extensive induction, supervision and training arrangements and reaffirmed its commitment to staff development and high-quality care.
