Summary of report content

Healthwatch Bolton undertook research on independent living and extra care housing options in Bolton. They spoke to 149 people through surveys, interviews and group discussions to understand what would encourage or discourage people from considering independent living for themselves or their loved ones in the future.

Location emerged as the most important factor influencing housing decisions. People wanted homes in safe, familiar communities close to family, friends, local amenities and transport links. Participants preferred accommodation that was spacious, adaptable to changing needs, easy to maintain and offered both privacy and opportunities for social interaction. Safety, security and the overall quality of the environment were also seen as essential.

Respondents wanted independent living communities to provide a mix of private and communal spaces, modern facilities, good internet access, gardens, cafés, exercise opportunities and activities that reflected the interests of today's older adults. Access to healthcare services such as GPs, physiotherapy and podiatry was considered important, as were practical services including maintenance, transport links, emergency support, parking and security measures. Participants generally favoured having both rental and ownership options available and expressed concerns about the financial implications of different tenure models.

The report concluded that choice, flexibility and clear information were central to successful independent living provision. People wanted straightforward advice available both online and in printed formats, access to trusted and independent advisers to help them understand housing and financial options, and opportunities to participate in decisions affecting their community. Healthwatch Bolton also found that awareness of extra care housing was low and suggested that a myth-busting and information campaign could help people better understand the choices available.
