Healthwatch Bolton undertook an Enter and View visit to Rivington View Nursing Home on 1 March 2019.
The visit found that the home provided a bright, welcoming and homely environment where residents appeared settled and content. Residents and visitors spoke positively about staff, describing them as caring and supportive, and staff were observed interacting with residents in a respectful and appropriate manner. The home offered a range of activities, including exercise sessions, singing, outings, a therapy dog and supported visits to the local library.
Residents were generally satisfied with the quality of food, their ability to make choices about daily routines and the support they received. However, some residents reported delays in receiving assistance, particularly when they needed help to use the toilet, and both residents and staff expressed concerns about staffing levels. While staff described management positively and felt able to raise concerns, some reported feeling overworked at times because of staff shortages.
Healthwatch Bolton concluded that the home was operating to a good standard and identified many examples of good practice. Recommendations included recruiting additional staff and displaying activity schedules more prominently for residents and visitors. The provider accepted the recommendations, confirmed that recruitment was underway and introduced a more visible activities board within the home.
