Healthwatch Warwickshire undertook an Enter and View visit to Newstead Lodge Nursing Home on 8 March 2023.
The visit found that the home provided a clean, calm and welcoming environment for residents, most of whom were living with dementia. Staff were observed treating residents with dignity and respect, creating a positive atmosphere and demonstrating good relationships with residents. Residents appeared well cared for, were encouraged to spend time in communal areas if they wished, and spoke positively about the support they received.
The report highlighted several areas of good practice. Staff training was described as thorough and comprehensive, staffing levels were high due to the complex needs of residents, and the home benefitted from regular visits from GPs and other healthcare professionals including dentists, opticians and chiropodists. The kitchen was noted to be clean and well organised, with personalised dietary needs catered for and residents offered choice in their meals. The home was also observed to be exceptionally clean, with no unpleasant odours and well-maintained communal and outdoor areas.
Healthwatch Warwickshire concluded that Newstead Lodge provided a high standard of care in a supportive environment. The only recommendation was to explore the purchase or rental of transport to enable residents to take part in more trips and outings outside the home.
