Healthwatch Warwickshire undertook research on views about community hospital beds in South Warwickshire. They received 427 survey responses, including 194 people who had no direct experience of community hospital beds but wanted to share their views about what they would want if they needed care in the future.
The survey found strong support for community hospital beds. Seventy per cent of respondents said they would prefer ongoing recovery and rehabilitation to take place in a community hospital following discharge from an acute hospital. People valued access to 24-hour care while remaining close to home, family and friends, and many saw community hospitals as an important transition between acute hospital care and returning home.
The factors considered most important during recovery were access to medical care, rehabilitation support, safety, independence and having support from family and friends. Respondents consistently highlighted the importance of local facilities, easier visiting for relatives and carers, and avoiding long journeys to larger hospitals. Many also viewed community hospitals as a vital part of local communities, particularly in rural areas where access to services can be challenging.
Overall, respondents strongly supported retaining community hospital bed provision in South Warwickshire. Feedback emphasised the value of community hospitals in supporting recovery, reducing pressure on acute hospitals and providing a more local, personal and reassuring environment for rehabilitation and ongoing care.
