Summary of report content

Healthwatch Kingston undertook an Enter and View visit to HF Trust Thetford Road on 29 July 2025. The visit found that the home provided a supportive and person-centred environment for adults with learning disabilities. Residents appeared happy, confident and comfortable in the home, spoke positively about staff and the support they received, and were encouraged to be as independent as possible in managing daily activities, medication and household responsibilities.

The report highlighted strong relationships between residents and staff, good teamwork and a positive culture within the home. Residents were supported to take part in a wide range of meaningful activities tailored to their interests, including volunteering, attending day services, shopping, eating out, swimming and community activities. Mealtimes were also viewed positively, with residents involved in choosing menus, preparing food and carrying out household tasks. Staff demonstrated a good understanding of individual preferences and dietary needs, including support for residents with diabetes.

A small number of areas for improvement were identified. Parts of the home were described as clean but dated, with worn furniture and communal areas requiring redecoration. Healthwatch also noted that recent bereavements had affected some residents and suggested additional support around loss and bereavement. Other concerns included the poor condition of the garden shed, difficulties residents experienced using contactless payment cards because of organisational policies, and limited quiet communal space when activities such as karaoke were taking place.

Healthwatch Kingston recommended updating the décor and furnishings, replacing the garden shed, strengthening support around bereavement, reviewing policies relating to residents' use of debit cards, and exploring options for creating additional communal space. The provider accepted the recommendations and outlined plans to undertake refurbishment work, replace the shed and review the issues raised.
