Healthwatch Tower Hamlets undertook research on the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on local residents during March 2020. They analysed the views of 33 residents shared through social media to understand how people were experiencing lockdown, self-isolation and changes to health services.
Many residents reported that staying at home was having a negative impact on their mental and physical wellbeing. People described feeling isolated, anxious, trapped and stressed, particularly those living in overcrowded housing, those with existing mental health conditions and those separated from family and friends. Concerns were also raised about people not following public health guidance, with some residents worried that this would prolong restrictions and increase the spread of the virus.
The report highlighted particular challenges for vulnerable groups, including people who were self-isolating without support networks, those receiving care at home, homeless people and people who struggled to access reliable information in their own language. Residents also reported concerns about access to healthcare for non-Covid conditions, difficulties with remote consultations, uncertainty about how services were operating and worries about delayed or reduced healthcare during the pandemic.
The report also found evidence of strong community responses to the crisis. Local authorities, community organisations and NHS workers were working together to support residents, and some local people expressed a willingness to volunteer and assist vulnerable neighbours. Healthwatch highlighted the need for clear information, practical support for isolated residents and continued efforts to help communities respond to the challenges created by the pandemic.
