Summary of report content

Healthwatch North Yorkshire gathered the views of 530 people in 2019 to inform implementation of the NHS Long Term Plan. Across surveys and focus groups, the strongest messages were the need for timely access to healthcare, better communication, more joined-up working between services and greater involvement of patients in decisions about their care. People wanted healthcare professionals to listen to them, provide clear information and work collaboratively with patients to find the right treatment and support.

Access to services was the dominant theme. Respondents highlighted difficulties obtaining GP appointments, long waits for treatment, challenges accessing mental health services and the impact of living in a rural area. Many wanted more local services, better transport support and greater availability of community-based care to help people remain independent and stay in their own homes for as long as possible. Faster diagnosis, shorter waiting times and easier access to specialists were particularly important for people living with long-term conditions.

People generally supported greater use of technology, such as online appointments and access to health records, but stressed that digital services should not replace human contact. Many were concerned about digital exclusion, particularly for older people, those with disabilities and residents in areas with poor internet connectivity. There was also strong support for better mental health provision, more community support, greater continuity of care and improved communication between health and social care services.

The report concluded that local implementation of the NHS Long Term Plan should focus on improving access, maintaining local and community-based services, strengthening communication, supporting prevention and healthy living, and involving people more meaningfully in decisions about both their own care and wider service changes. Respondents also wanted clearer evidence that public feedback leads to real improvements in health and care services.
