Healthwatch North Yorkshire carried out an Enter and View visit to Rosedale Nursing Home in July 2023. Overall, the home was found to provide a good standard of care, with a homely atmosphere and positive relationships between residents, staff and families. Residents generally described themselves as happy and safe, staff were observed to be friendly and knowledgeable, and family members spoke positively about the care provided. The home was clean, welcoming and well maintained, with the recently refurbished Lodge unit receiving particular praise.
Residents and relatives were largely satisfied with the care and support available. Staff appeared to know residents well and were familiar with their individual preferences and needs. Food was generally well regarded, with residents appreciating the choices available and family members describing meals as freshly prepared. Residents also had access to healthcare services including GPs, district nurses and hospice support when required.
The main concerns related to social opportunities, activities and the environment. Some residents felt there was not enough to do and would have liked a wider variety of activities, while observers felt more could be done to encourage social interaction and make greater use of communal areas and the outdoor space. Family members also suggested residents could be supported more often to spend time in the garden. Concerns were also raised about food variety and taste, staffing pressures and the need for additional training and wellbeing support for staff.
Healthwatch concluded that Rosedale was providing good-quality care but identified several areas for improvement. Recommendations included encouraging greater participation in meaningful activities, reviewing the food offer, improving opportunities for social interaction, making better use of outdoor areas, reviewing staff training and wellbeing support, updating parking signage and ensuring staff have opportunities for ongoing development and communication.
