Healthwatch North Yorkshire carried out an Enter and View visit to Beanlands Nursing Home in October 2015. Overall, the home was found to provide a very good standard of care. Residents appeared clean, comfortable and well supported, and relatives expressed high levels of satisfaction with the care provided. The home specialised in end-of-life care and held Gold Standards Framework accreditation, with staff demonstrating a strong commitment to supporting residents and families through advanced care planning and palliative care needs.
The home was praised for its pleasant environment, attractive grounds and welcoming atmosphere. Residents were able to personalise their rooms and enjoyed a range of activities including baking sessions, gardening, outings and community events. Staff interactions with residents were observed to be caring and respectful, and relatives spoke positively about communication and support from staff. The home also made use of telemedicine services linked to Airedale Hospital, helping to avoid unnecessary hospital admissions.
Some concerns were raised regarding the environment for residents living with dementia. Although the home was not registered as a specialist dementia service, a number of residents had cognitive impairment. Healthwatch felt there was scope to make the environment more dementia-friendly through improved signage, décor and stimulation. Observations also identified some unpleasant odours in parts of the building, concerns about the use of china cups for individuals with dementia, and a need for more activities tailored to residents with cognitive impairment.
Healthwatch concluded that Beanlands was delivering high-quality care with strong staff commitment, good end-of-life support and positive resident and family experiences. Recommendations focused on improving dementia-friendly features and activities, reviewing risks for residents with dementia, considering additional door alarms where appropriate, addressing odours within the building and exploring greater use of hand hygiene measures before and after meals. The provider responded positively, highlighting existing dementia training, ongoing refurbishment and existing safety measures already in place.
