Enter and view: Rosedale Nursing Home, Catterick Garrison

Healthwatch North Yorkshire carried out an Enter and View visit to Rosedale Nursing Home in Catterick Garrison in July 2015. Overall, the home was found to provide a very good standard of care, with residents appearing well cared for, respected and comfortable in their surroundings. Staff interactions were observed to be warm, friendly and supportive, and relatives spoke positively about both the care provided and the communication they received from the home. 

The home’s environment was a particular strength. Residents’ rooms were personalised, bright and spacious, and the dementia unit included dementia-friendly features such as sensory displays, memory prompts and themed décor designed to stimulate long-term memories. Residents were encouraged to remain active and independent where possible, with a varied programme of activities, outings, gardening projects and one-to-one support for those unable to join group sessions. Food provision was also viewed positively, with home-cooked meals, specialist diets and close involvement from dietitians and speech and language therapists. 

Staff described strong teamwork, good training opportunities and supportive leadership. Healthwatch noted effective handover processes, detailed care planning and a person-centred approach to supporting residents. Relatives were complimentary about staff commitment, with examples given of staff providing emotional support and maintaining close communication when residents’ health deteriorated. 

Healthwatch concluded that Rosedale Nursing Home was delivering high-quality care and identified no major concerns. While some challenges were highlighted, including delays in obtaining mobility equipment from NHS services and occasional problems with hospital discharge information, no formal recommendations for improvement were made. The report encouraged the home to continue maintaining the high standards of care, environment and resident engagement that were observed during the visit.
