Healthwatch Liverpool held an online “Meet Liverpool’s Cancer Professionals” webinar in November 2021, bringing together staff from Liverpool University Hospitals, Liverpool Women’s Hospital, Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, Citizens Advice Liverpool and Liverpool Sunflowers. The discussion focused on the impact of Covid-19 on cancer services, recovery plans, patient experience and access to support. Professionals reported that cancer services had continued throughout the pandemic, although staff shortages, increased demand and the need to adapt to remote working had created significant challenges.
A major theme was the importance of communication and joined-up care. Panellists acknowledged that patients and families can become frustrated when different hospitals and services do not communicate effectively with one another. Organisations described efforts to improve information sharing through electronic records, virtual multidisciplinary working and better coordination between hospitals and community services. There was also discussion about the need to reduce medical jargon, improve communication with families and ensure patients are kept informed throughout their treatment.
The webinar highlighted the wide range of practical and emotional support available beyond medical treatment. Citizens Advice Liverpool, Macmillan services and Liverpool Sunflowers described support with benefits, finances, counselling, wellbeing, social isolation and family concerns. Particular attention was given to the psychological impact of cancer on patients and their families, the need for holistic care, and the value of support services that help people manage the wider consequences of a cancer diagnosis.
Professionals also discussed future challenges and opportunities, including increasing service demand, workforce pressures and the opening of the new Clatterbridge Cancer Centre Liverpool. While participants recognised continuing difficulties around transport, visiting arrangements, obtaining information and accessing support, the overall emphasis was on improving patient experience, strengthening partnership working and ensuring cancer care is delivered in a more coordinated and person-centred way across Liverpool and the wider region.
