Care at the Chemist

Healthwatch Liverpool reviewed the Care at the Chemist service, which enables eligible patients to receive free treatment for a range of minor ailments directly from participating pharmacies. Feedback was gathered from 354 service users during June 2019. Overall, satisfaction was very high, with 90% saying they would recommend the service to others and many describing it as a quick, easy and convenient alternative to visiting a GP. 

The most valued aspects of the service were that it was free, accessible and avoided the need to book a GP appointment. Many respondents, particularly those on lower incomes, appreciated being able to receive treatment and advice quickly from pharmacists. The report estimated that, without the service, 69% of respondents would have visited their GP, highlighting the scheme’s role in reducing pressure on primary care services. 

The main areas for improvement were increasing awareness of the service and expanding the range of conditions and treatments available. Over half of respondents had never seen any advertising for Care at the Chemist and many only became aware of it because pharmacy staff told them about it. Respondents also expressed interest in pharmacists being able to provide treatment for a wider range of minor health conditions.

Healthwatch concluded that the service is highly valued by those who use it and provides an effective alternative to GP appointments for minor ailments. Recommendations included increasing publicity and public awareness, considering expansion of the service where appropriate, and continuing to support pharmacies as an accessible first point of contact for minor health concerns.
