Healthwatch Liverpool carried out an Enter and View visit to Eldonian House on 22 February 2018. The home provides residential care for older people living with dementia. Overall, Healthwatch found a clean, welcoming environment and observed positive interactions between staff and residents. A resident spoken to during the visit was complimentary about both the manager and staff, describing the home as well cared for and friendly.
The home was undergoing refurbishment, including the conversion of storage areas into new bedrooms and improvements to facilities. Residents had access to activities such as music sessions, community bingo events and trips to a local social club. Healthwatch observed residents actively engaging in a music activity and noted a caring approach from staff. The home also provided freshly prepared meals and had good relationships with local healthcare services.
The main concerns related to the environment and dementia-friendly design. Healthwatch felt the home could do more to support residents living with dementia through clearer navigation, more personalised bedroom doors and additional visual prompts around the building. Minor maintenance issues were also identified, including damaged raised garden beds, loose carpet edging and supplies being stored on corridor handrails.
Healthwatch concluded that Eldonian House was providing positive care and support, but recommended a stronger focus on dementia-friendly design, gardening opportunities for residents and environmental improvements to promote independence, wellbeing and orientation for people living with dementia.
