Healthwatch Liverpool carried out an Enter and View visit to James Nugent Court on 27 February 2018. The home provides residential care for older people, including those living with dementia. Overall, Healthwatch found a clean, modern and welcoming environment, with residents speaking positively about the care they received and praising staff for being supportive and attentive. One resident described the home as “like a hotel” and said they felt very well looked after.
The home benefited from spacious en-suite bedrooms, wide corridors, communal lounges, dining areas, gardens and a café for residents and visitors. Healthwatch was particularly impressed by the catering arrangements, which offered freshly prepared meals, flexibility around food choices and support for a range of dietary and cultural needs. Activities included exercise sessions, visits from local schools, music groups and a programme developed with a specialist wellbeing provider.
The newly appointed manager outlined plans to improve dementia-friendly features, increase personalised activities, update care planning processes and strengthen family involvement. Healthwatch observed some minor maintenance issues in communal bathrooms and noted that one lounge was temporarily being used for storage, but was satisfied that these issues were already being addressed.
Healthwatch concluded that James Nugent Court was providing a high standard of care in a purpose-built environment. No formal recommendations were made at the time of the visit, with Healthwatch instead planning a follow-up visit to review the improvements the manager intended to introduce.
