Enter and view: Greenheys Lodge

Healthwatch Liverpool carried out an Enter and View visit to Greenheys Lodge on 12 December 2017. The home provides residential care for older people, including some residents living with dementia. Overall, Healthwatch found a clean, welcoming and well-maintained environment, with positive interactions between staff and residents. Residents appeared comfortable and engaged, and the home offered a range of communal areas, gardens and facilities to support daily life. 

A particular strength was the range of activities available. Residents could take part in community lunches, shopping trips, church visits, animal therapy, exercise sessions and seasonal events. The home also had a hairdressing salon and was developing a wellbeing room to promote relaxation. Feedback from relatives was largely positive, particularly regarding activities and recreation opportunities. 

Residents and relatives generally spoke positively about the quality of care, food and access to healthcare support. However, some concerns were raised about staffing continuity, communication and involving residents in decisions about their care. Healthwatch also noted that bedroom doors were very similar in appearance and that some environmental features, such as handrails, could be improved to better support people living with dementia. 

Healthwatch concluded that Greenheys Lodge provided a good standard of care in a positive environment. Recommendations focused on completing planned bathroom improvements and making residents’ bedroom doors more personalised and dementia-friendly to help support independence and orientation.
