Enter and view: St Brendan's

Healthwatch Luton carried out an Enter and View visit to St Brendan’s Care Home on 26 May 2026. The home provides residential and respite care for older people, including those living with dementia, mental health conditions, physical disabilities and sensory impairments. Overall, Healthwatch found a clean, welcoming and well-maintained environment where residents appeared comfortable and staff interacted with them in a respectful and supportive manner. 

Residents generally spoke positively about the care they received, describing staff as kind, caring and approachable. They reported feeling safe and well supported, with access to healthcare services such as GPs, dentists, opticians and district nurses. Staff described a positive team culture, regular training and good morale, and relatives who visited the home were complimentary about communication and the support provided to residents and families.

The main area of concern related to social engagement. While the home reported a programme of activities and community involvement, none were observed during the visit and some residents felt there were limited opportunities for meaningful activity, describing the television as the main source of entertainment. Some residents also felt the communal lounge could be noisy and that meal choices at lunchtime were limited. 

Healthwatch concluded that St Brendan’s provides a caring and supportive environment with positive staff-resident relationships. Recommendations focused on increasing meaningful activities and engagement opportunities, reviewing meal choice and how menus are communicated, and improving the layout and atmosphere of communal lounge areas to enhance residents’ comfort and wellbeing.
