Healthwatch Luton carried out an Enter and View visit to YAWN Life on 3 March 2026. YAWN Life is a day service for adults with learning disabilities, providing a range of centre-based and community activities. Overall, Healthwatch found a welcoming, inclusive and well-maintained service where people appeared comfortable, engaged and supported. Service users spoke positively about the staff and the opportunity to socialise, learn new skills and take part in meaningful activities.
The service was particularly praised for its person-centred approach and focus on independence. Activities included gardening, cooking, swimming, exercise, arts and community projects, with individual timetables tailored to personal interests and preferences. Healthwatch observed positive relationships between staff and service users, with communication adapted to individual needs through approaches such as Makaton and visual aids. Service users reported feeling listened to, respected and involved in decisions about their support.
The environment was described as clean, accessible and well organised. Facilities included communal activity areas, a kitchen, gym, garden and a dedicated flat used to develop independent living skills such as cooking and household tasks. Staff reported good morale, low turnover and strong teamwork, with regular training and development opportunities helping them meet the needs of service users.
Healthwatch identified no significant concerns. Recommendations focused on strengthening formal opportunities for service users to provide feedback and ensuring dietary preferences continue to be recorded and reviewed consistently. Overall, the report concluded that YAWN Life provides a positive, supportive and engaging service that helps people build independence, maintain social connections and participate meaningfully in their community.
