Enter and view: Onkar House

Healthwatch Ealing carried out an Enter and View visit to Onkar House, a supported housing service for adults with complex mental health needs, substance misuse issues and dual diagnoses. Overall, residents described the service positively, reporting that they felt safe, supported and happy living there. Staff were praised as helpful, approachable and committed to residents’ wellbeing, and residents spoke highly of the support they received with their recovery and independence. 

The home was found to be clean, recently refurbished and equipped with a range of facilities including communal living areas, a dedicated therapeutic group room and an outdoor garden space. Residents appreciated the activities available, including games, communal meals and therapy sessions, although some felt there could be more outdoor activities and improvements to the garden area. 

Staff reported positive working relationships and a supportive culture, although they would welcome more practical and hands-on training. Both residents and staff spoke positively about communication within the home, and residents felt comfortable raising concerns or complaints. However, Healthwatch observed one resident bedroom that was unclean and contained potential fire hazards, while staff also noted an ongoing problem with cockroaches within the property. 

Healthwatch concluded that Onkar House provides a supportive and recovery-focused environment where residents generally feel respected and well cared for. Recommendations focused on improving the garden area, upgrading the Wi-Fi, involving residents in decisions about décor, maintaining bedroom cleanliness through support and room checks, expanding outdoor activities, and continuing to provide opportunities for residents to raise concerns and contribute to the running of the home.
