Summary of report content

The Sheffield Maternity Cooperative received funding through Healthwatch Sheffield’s #SpeakUp programme to explore experiences of pregnancy, abortion and pregnancy loss during the Covid-19 pandemic. Through a series of creative workshops including poetry, collage, life drawing and clay sessions, participants were able to share and reflect on their experiences in a supportive environment. The project aimed to amplify voices that are often overlooked, provide peer support, increase awareness of available services and highlight gaps in maternity care.

Participants reported that Covid-19 restrictions had a significant impact on their maternity experiences. A recurring concern was the lack of clear and consistent guidance about restrictions, particularly around partner attendance and support during appointments and labour. Some participants felt that communication from services lacked empathy and that important health concerns were sometimes dismissed. Many also described a need for greater postnatal support, including advice on breastfeeding, physical recovery, newborn health and parental mental wellbeing.

The project also highlighted concerns around labour and birth experiences. Participants emphasised the importance of ensuring that people are not left alone during labour, that requests for pain relief are taken seriously and that staff receive training to improve sensitivity and understanding of the emotional significance of pregnancy-related care. Concerns were raised about inequalities in pain management and the impact that cultural and language barriers can have on accessing appropriate support. Participants also stressed the value of continuity of care and the importance of building trusting relationships with healthcare professionals.

The Sheffield Maternity Cooperative recommended clearer communication about service changes, increased postnatal support, better awareness of signs of premature labour, additional support for first-time parents and stronger collaboration between health services and culturally relevant community organisations. The report also called for greater research into the long-term psychological impact of pregnancy and birth during the pandemic and highlighted the importance of ensuring maternity services are respectful, inclusive and person-centred.
