Summary of report content

Healthwatch Hounslow reviewed four extra care housing schemes between January and March 2026, speaking to 36 residents, relatives and carers. Overall, residents were positive about extra care housing, particularly the balance between maintaining independence and having support available when needed. Residents valued the sense of community, opportunities to socialise, support from staff and the reassurance of living independently while knowing help was available. Most residents felt their care needs and personal outcomes were being met, and many described staff as caring, approachable and responsive.

Resident activities, meetings and communal dining were identified as important strengths. Activities helped residents stay active, reduce loneliness and improve wellbeing, while resident meetings provided opportunities to raise concerns and receive updates. Most residents used the restaurant facilities and appreciated the affordability, convenience and social aspects of eating with others. However, people also highlighted barriers to participation. Residents with mobility or health conditions often found it difficult to access activities, some felt resident meetings did not always lead to visible action, and others wanted more variety and better accommodation of dietary requirements in restaurant menus.

A key theme was the importance of independence. Residents frequently spoke about enjoying their own space, maintaining control over their lives and feeling secure because support was available when required. While 72% felt their needs were being met and 70% believed their personal outcomes were being achieved, concerns included high staff turnover, inconsistent carers, equipment needs, financial pressures and limitations caused by poor health. Some residents also reported that support plans were not always discussed or reviewed with them regularly.

Healthwatch Hounslow recommended improving consistency of care staff, strengthening communication about support plans and resident meeting outcomes, increasing the accessibility and variety of activities, ensuring restaurant menus better meet dietary needs, and providing more opportunities for residents to develop independence and achieve personal goals. The report concluded that extra care housing plays an important role in supporting residents' wellbeing, independence and quality of life, but that greater attention to accessibility, communication and personalised support would further improve residents' experiences.
