Summary of report content

Healthwatch Sheffield carried out an Enter and View visit to Scarsdale Grange Nursing Home, a 53-bed residential and nursing home for people living with dementia. Overall, residents, relatives and staff spoke positively about the service, with residents expressing satisfaction with their care and one describing it as “a great place to live”. Relatives praised the quality of care, staff support and range of activities available. Healthwatch also observed caring interactions between staff and residents throughout the visit.

The home was found to provide a generally suitable environment, with all residents having en-suite rooms and access to communal living, dining and activity spaces. However, Healthwatch identified a need for refurbishment to some indoor areas and the garden, including repairs to a damaged gazebo. Management confirmed that improvements were planned, including redecorating communal areas and adapting bedroom doors to help residents with dementia identify their rooms more easily.

Staff reported good access to training and development opportunities, including moving and handling, NVQ qualifications, mental capacity, Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards and end-of-life care. There was also an active programme of activities led by a dedicated coordinator. Residents were complimentary about the food, describing it as varied and flexible, and Healthwatch observed staff supporting residents appropriately during refreshments. The home also used personalised “This is Me” profiles to help ensure care was tailored to individual preferences, histories and needs.

Healthwatch concluded that residents were well cared for and generally satisfied with the service. Recommendations focused on completing planned refurbishment work, continuing high standards of staff training and ensuring residents are involved in creating personalised care information wherever possible. The provider accepted the findings and described the report as fair.
