Enter and view: Andrews Court Care Home

Healthwatch Blackburn with Darwen carried out an Enter and View visit to Andrews Court Care Home, a 35-bed service supporting older people, including those living with dementia. The home received an overall amber-green rating. Despite a period of management change, representatives found a caring and supportive culture, with residents, relatives and staff speaking positively about the kindness and professionalism of the care team. Residents described staff as "lovely" and reported feeling safe, supported and able to maintain their independence.

The home was found to offer a good range of activities and social opportunities, supported by a proactive activity coordinator who organised events, entertainment, reminiscence sessions, pet therapy, exercise activities and seasonal celebrations. Food was widely praised by residents and relatives, with feedback highlighting the quality, flexibility and variety of meals. The menu offered a broad selection of traditional dishes and alternatives were available on request. Residents also valued the friendly atmosphere and the opportunities to socialise or spend time quietly according to their preferences. 

Healthwatch identified several areas for improvement in the physical environment. The building was considered clean and comfortable but somewhat dull and in need of refurbishment, particularly within corridors, communal areas and outdoor spaces. Representatives felt there was scope to improve dementia-friendly features such as signage, colour contrast and environmental orientation. Concerns were also raised about communication with relatives during a period of management turnover, with some family members reporting that they wanted more regular updates about incidents, activities and care planning. 

The main concern highlighted in the report related to mealtime experiences. While the quality and variety of food were praised, Healthwatch observed occasions where residents requiring support did not receive timely assistance and where some residents' nutritional needs appeared to be overlooked during lunch. Following receipt of the report, the provider accepted the findings, confirmed that refurbishment works were already underway, and introduced a lunchtime supervisor role to improve oversight and support during mealtimes. Overall, Healthwatch concluded that Andrews Court was delivering many aspects of care that mattered to residents, supported by a committed staff team and a willingness to improve.
