Healthwatch Greenwich carried out an Enter and View visit to 58 The Village, a six-bed residential care home supporting adults with learning disabilities. The home, which was rated Good by the Care Quality Commission, made a very positive impression overall. Healthwatch found it to be spacious, welcoming and homely, with residents supported to live independently and participate actively in everyday life. Staff were described as professional, knowledgeable and committed to residents' wellbeing.
The environment was well maintained and highly personalised. Residents' bedrooms reflected their individual interests, and communal areas included accessible menus, personalised picture timetables, displays of residents' activities and artwork, and a large, attractive garden where residents grew fruit and vegetables. Residents were actively involved in meal planning and preparation, with menus designed to be accessible and responsive to individual preferences.
Residents attended a range of external activities including day centres, woodwork, art classes, leisure centre sessions and community groups. The home also organised outings tailored to individual interests, such as theatre trips, football matches and visits to galleries. Regular house meetings were used to gather feedback and share information, and staff demonstrated a good understanding of residents' needs, preferences and communication styles. The limited direct feedback obtained from a resident during the visit was positive, with the resident indicating that he was happy living in the home.
The main concern identified related to security arrangements. On arrival, Healthwatch was able to enter the home after a resident answered the door before staff became aware of visitors, raising concerns about visitor monitoring. Recommendations focused on reviewing visitor procedures, considering the installation of CCTV or other alert systems linked to the entrance, and sharing examples of good practice from the home across other services in the borough. Overall, Healthwatch considered the service to be a strong example of person-centred residential support.
