Enter and view: Danecroft Care Home

Healthwatch Bedford Borough carried out an Enter and View visit to Danecroft Care Home, which supports older people, including those living with dementia and physical disabilities. The visit found a welcoming, well-maintained and person-centred environment. Residents, relatives and staff provided consistently positive feedback, with residents describing the home as safe, supportive and responsive to their needs. Strong relationships with local healthcare providers, excellent staff retention and a stable workforce were highlighted as key strengths. 

The home placed a strong emphasis on resident wellbeing, offering thoughtfully designed indoor and outdoor spaces including accessible gardens, a sensory room, a nail bar, hair salon and social spaces for residents and families. Residents were encouraged to make choices about daily life, meals and activities, and regular meetings were used to gather feedback and shape improvements. A wide range of activities and community events helped keep residents engaged and involved. 

Staff described Danecroft as "like a family" and reported feeling well supported through training, supervision and wellbeing initiatives. Management was highly visible and accessible, with clear systems for communication, care planning and responding to resident and family feedback. Healthwatch observed a warm atmosphere throughout the home, with residents appearing comfortable, well cared for and involved in daily life. 

Healthwatch concluded that Danecroft provides a high-quality service with many examples of good practice. The main areas for improvement related to replacing a carpet in one resident's room to address odour concerns, strengthening access to specialist dementia support during periods of acute need, demonstrating more visibly how feedback influences service improvements, and sharing examples of the home's innovative environmental adaptations with the wider care sector.
