Identifying young carers in substance misuse households in Brent

Brent Carers Centre worked with Addaction and Healthwatch Brent to better understand why young carers living in households affected by substance misuse were not being identified and referred for support. The research involved surveys and consultation groups with substance users who were parents. Despite Brent having a large population of young carers, very few had been identified through addiction services, and participants highlighted significant barriers to seeking help, including fear, stigma, shame and concerns that children might be removed from the family. 

The findings suggested that many children were undertaking substantial caring responsibilities. Respondents reported children helping with household tasks, emotional support, shopping, cooking, cleaning and, in some cases, personal care. Emotional support was the most common role reported. Children as young as five were identified as helping regularly, and the research suggested that over 30% of children may have been providing inappropriate levels of care. 

Although around 59% of respondents were aware of the term "young carer", none had previously accessed support services for their children. Participants said trusted professionals such as substance misuse workers, school staff and GPs were best placed to identify young carers and signpost families to support. The types of support most valued included emotional support and counselling, opportunities for young people to enjoy activities and breaks from caring, peer support and practical help for the whole family. 

The report concluded that stronger partnership working is needed between young carers' services, schools, substance misuse services, health organisations and social care. Key recommendations included improving staff training and awareness, introducing young carers champions in services, strengthening referral pathways, increasing publicity about support available, and developing closer collaboration between young carers, mental health and substance misuse services.
