Healthwatch South Gloucestershire and Hivewatch carried out an Enter and View visit to 121 Watley's End Road, a residential care home for 14 people with learning and physical disabilities. The visit formed part of a wider programme examining the experiences of people with learning disabilities using local health and care services. Representatives observed interactions between residents and staff, toured the home and spoke with staff and one resident who was able to participate in the discussion.
Representatives found the home to be clean, bright, accessible and welcoming, with a large secure garden, sensory room, arts and crafts room, conservatory and communal lounge areas. Residents appeared relaxed and comfortable around staff, and staff demonstrated a good understanding of residents' individual communication needs, particularly for those who mainly used non-verbal communication. Bedrooms were personalised and residents were able to choose furnishings and decorations for their rooms.
A particular strength was the positive atmosphere within the home. During the visit, residents were participating in the regular "Wednesday Club" entertainment session and appeared to enjoy the activities. Staff described a range of opportunities including shopping trips, holidays, gardening, cooking and social events. Representatives also noted good access to healthcare professionals, with regular visits from GPs and other health services.
The main areas for improvement related to communication and accessibility of information. There were no easy-read menus or communication materials available at the time of the visit, despite many residents having complex communication needs. Representatives suggested introducing photo-based and easy-read menus, accessible snack and drink choices, and additional communication aids to help residents express preferences more independently. A further recommendation was made after representatives observed the medicines room left open and unattended during the visit.
Overall, Healthwatch concluded that residents appeared happy, well supported and engaged in activities, and that staff provided caring and personalised support. Recommendations focused on strengthening accessible information, improving communication tools for residents and ensuring medicines management procedures were consistently followed.
