Summary of report content

Healthwatch Staffordshire undertook an Enter and View visit to the Accident and Emergency Department at Queen's Hospital Burton on 16 April 2026. The visit focused on the department's new layout, patient experiences, ambulance turnaround times and planned future developments. Despite the department being extremely busy on the day, Healthwatch observed a calm, efficient and well-organised service.

The recently refurbished entrance and waiting area were found to be more spacious, comfortable and easier to navigate than previous arrangements. Healthwatch was particularly positive about the department's approach to early assessment and streaming, which aims to begin investigations quickly and direct patients to the most appropriate pathway. Dedicated facilities for children, mental health patients and urgent cases were also identified as strengths.

Some concerns raised by patients prior to the visit related to parking and difficulties dropping off relatives with mobility issues close to the entrance. The department was also experiencing staffing pressures following a temporary vacancy freeze, although recruitment had recommenced and services had been maintained throughout the winter period.

Overall, Healthwatch concluded that the department was functioning effectively and that staff demonstrated professionalism and strong teamwork under pressure. The visit confirmed that recent changes had improved the patient environment, and the Trust committed to seeking patient feedback as part of future redevelopment plans for the department.
