Summary of report content

Healthwatch Greenwich visited Brook House Care Centre shortly after it came under new ownership following a period in special measures. Overall, the home was found to be caring, welcoming and making positive progress, with good relationships observed between staff and residents and a varied programme of activities available across the home.

Staff were described as kind, respectful and passionate about their work, responding promptly to residents’ needs and creating a relaxed atmosphere. Residents had personalised rooms, access to activities, outings, hairdressing services and a developing sensory garden for people living with dementia. Food choices were varied and tailored to individual dietary requirements.

The main concerns related to the physical environment rather than the quality of care. Healthwatch observed rubbish in the car park, tired décor in some areas, damaged or non-contrasting handrails, and inconsistencies in the standard of some bathrooms. Concerns were also raised about difficulties contacting the home's new GP provider and the temporary pause in resident meetings following the change in ownership.

Overall, Healthwatch concluded that Brook House was providing a positive and caring service with clear improvements since previous concerns were identified. Recommendations focused on improving the environment, strengthening communication with healthcare providers, reinstating resident feedback meetings and maintaining the home's ongoing improvement programme.
