Healthwatch Lancashire visited Abbeyfield House Care Home in October 2023 and found a warm, welcoming service where residents, relatives and staff were overwhelmingly positive about the quality of care provided. The home accommodated 37 residents at the time of the visit and had recently undergone refurbishment to improve communal areas and facilities. 

Residents praised the caring and compassionate staff, the personalised approach to care, the range of activities available and the comfortable environment. Relatives were highly complimentary about communication and involvement, while staff described a positive workplace culture focused on person-centred care and continuous improvement. 

Key Findings

• Residents were positive about the environment, particularly the personalised rooms, refurbished communal spaces and accessible outdoor areas. 
• Activities were tailored to residents' interests and included gardening, quizzes, bingo, crafts and visits from animals. 
• Most residents felt they received excellent care and described staff as thoughtful, caring and attentive.
• Relatives reported feeling well informed and involved in their loved ones' care. 
• Staff demonstrated a strong commitment to person-centred care and actively used resident feedback to improve services. 
• The home maintained a clean, safe and dementia-friendly environment with good accessibility features. 
• One relative suggested communication about activities could be improved to ensure families remain fully informed. 

Conclusion

Healthwatch concluded that Abbeyfield House provides a high-quality, resident-focused service with strong relationships between residents, relatives and staff. Recommendations were relatively minor and focused on improving signage visibility, ensuring consistent use of staff name badges, increasing the prominence of resident feedback displays, and checking relatives' contact details to ensure they receive updates about activities and events.
