Healthwatch Wandsworth surveyed 108 residents to understand what helps or prevents people from being physically active and to inform the borough's Active Wandsworth Strategy. The consultation found that while most respondents did some physical activity, only 29% met the recommended level of 30 minutes of moderate exercise on five days a week. Younger people in particular reported lower levels of activity.
The main barriers to being more active were lack of time, low motivation and cost. Many respondents also said they would be more active if they had someone to exercise with, highlighting the importance of social opportunities. Other barriers included health conditions, childcare responsibilities, opening hours and accessibility issues.
Key Findings
- Lack of time, low motivation and cost were the most commonly reported barriers to exercise.
- Walking was the most frequently reported form of physical activity
- Many respondents wanted cheaper activities and more opportunities to exercise with others
- Residents called for more local activities, outdoor exercise equipment, walking groups, cycling routes and family-friendly opportunities.
- People with disabilities, health conditions or anxiety highlighted the need for more inclusive and accessible activities.
Conclusion
The report concluded that improving motivation, reducing cost barriers and increasing social and flexible opportunities for physical activity could help more residents become active. It also highlighted the importance of making activities accessible, affordable and easy to fit into everyday life.
