Summary of report content

Healthwatch Wirral conducted an Enter & View visit to St George’s Nursing Home in Wallasey on 22 May 2026 to gain an understanding of the service, observe care delivery and speak with staff, residents and families where possible.

St George’s Nursing Home is a family-run nursing home providing nursing, dementia, elderly and end-of-life care. The home can accommodate up to 50 residents and had 43 residents living there at the time of the visit. The provider aims to deliver person-centred, dignified and compassionate care while maintaining high staffing standards and minimising the use of agency workers.

Healthwatch found the building to be well maintained, clean and welcoming. Extensive refurbishment and renovation work had been carried out over the previous two to three years, including roof repairs, rewiring, replumbing, new flooring and refurbishment of bedrooms and communal areas. Further improvement work was still underway, including planned redevelopment of the garden and external spaces.

The reception area appeared bright, spacious and well organised. Dementia-friendly signage was visible throughout the home, and communal areas were clean, comfortable and suitably equipped. Bedrooms, bathrooms and dining areas were observed to be tidy, well lit and in good condition. Recently refurbished bathrooms were considered to be of a good standard.

Staff interactions with residents were observed to be caring, respectful and supportive. Residents appeared comfortable and well looked after. The home offers a variety of activities, including crafts, bingo, reading groups, exercise sessions, outings and social events. Visiting professionals such as hairdressers and podiatrists also support residents’ wellbeing.

The home has established relationships with local healthcare services. Residents are supported to register with GPs and dentists, and regular GP and paramedic visits take place. Management reported positive experiences with their local pharmacy provider but noted occasional difficulties when residents return from hospital with incomplete medication information. Access to timely dental care was highlighted as an ongoing challenge.

Healthwatch found that safeguarding arrangements appeared robust. Staff described clear reporting procedures, regular monitoring, training and audit processes. Falls management procedures were also in place, supported by specialist falls prevention services and technology.

Care plans are developed with input from residents and families and are regularly reviewed to ensure they remain person-centred. The home uses an electronic care planning system and staff reported positive experiences with NHS Continuing Healthcare fast-track processes.

Infection prevention and control procedures appeared comprehensive. Staff described clear processes for identifying and managing infections, including respiratory illnesses, Clostridium difficile and urinary tract infections. Appropriate training and guidance had been provided to staff.

The home employed 76 staff members. Healthwatch observed a positive workplace culture, with staff appearing engaged, supportive and happy in their roles. Mandatory training compliance was reported to be up to date, and management actively participated in local care home networks.

Healthwatch was unable to speak directly with residents or families during the visit. However, managers provided evidence of regular family engagement through meetings, care plan reviews and satisfaction surveys, which reportedly contained positive feedback. Families are encouraged to visit freely and can stay overnight when a resident is receiving end-of-life care
