Healthwatch Lancashire carried out an announced Enter and View visit to Hillcroft Nursing Home in Caton Green, Lancaster, on 10 November 2015. Hillcroft is a 31-bed nursing home providing care for older people, including those living with dementia and Alzheimer's disease. The visit involved observations of the home, discussions with six residents, four staff members and one relative, and an assessment of the environment, care, nutrition and activities.
The report found that Hillcroft Nursing Home provided a very high standard of care in a pleasant, well-maintained and welcoming environment. The home was described as clean, bright and free from unpleasant odours, with attractive gardens, accessible outdoor spaces and secure facilities. Public areas, bedrooms, bathrooms and corridors were well maintained and designed to support residents, including those living with dementia.
Inspectors observed positive and caring interactions between staff and residents throughout the visit. Staff were seen treating residents with dignity and respect, responding promptly to their needs and engaging them in activities such as games and social interaction. Staff demonstrated a strong understanding of residents as individuals and appeared committed to person-centred care.
Residents who were able to provide feedback generally said they were happy living at the home. They reported having privacy, being able to make choices about their daily routines, feeling safe and enjoying the garden and communal spaces. Many residents were living with advanced dementia, which limited the amount of feedback that could be collected.
The home offered a range of activities and opportunities for social engagement, including games, outings, a cinema-themed room, a sensory area, gardening projects and community events. Family and friends were encouraged to participate in activities and visit freely.
Feedback about food and nutrition was generally positive, although only a small number of residents were able to comment. Inspectors noted that drinks were available in communal dining areas and that residents had choices about where to eat.
The relative who completed a questionnaire expressed very positive views about the service. They stated that their family member was settled and confident in the staff, that communication about care was good, and that they would definitely recommend the home to others.
Staff feedback was also highly positive. All staff members interviewed said there were sufficient staffing levels, that they received appropriate training and support, and that they would recommend the home to a close relative. Staff reported being happy in their roles and described good opportunities for development.
