Summary of report content

Healthwatch St Helens undertook an announced enter and view visit to Ruskin Lodge Care Home on 19 May 2026 to observe care delivery, gather feedback from residents and staff, and identify good practice and areas for improvement.

Ruskin Lodge provides short-term respite care primarily for former Pilkington employees, their families, and members of the wider community, with additional welfare support from the Pilkington Family Trust. The home also operates a day centre three days a week, offering transport, activities, and meals for around 25–30 attendees.

The overall findings of the visit were very positive. The building and grounds were well maintained, clean, and welcoming, with a calm, comfortable environment that resembled a high-quality hotel. Staff were described as friendly, engaging, and committed, with low turnover and strong relationships with residents.

The home has 19 ensuite bedrooms, including double rooms for couples, and provides short stays typically lasting one to two weeks. Facilities include spacious lounges, dining areas, and well-equipped private rooms, although one lounge was noted as underused.

Staffing levels consist of care assistants, shift leads, and management, with some reliance on agency staff during a restructure. Staff receive training through a combination of online and in-house learning, and there is a supportive culture with regular supervision and development opportunities, although morale was reported to be slightly unsettled due to ongoing changes.

Residents are offered a range of social and recreational opportunities, including day trips, visiting entertainers, and activities such as bingo, although there is currently no dedicated activities coordinator. The home maintains strong links with local schools and encourages visits from family and pets.

Food provision was seen as a strength, with regular meals, flexible menu choices, and attention to dietary needs. Mealtimes are structured but residents can eat in their rooms if they prefer. Additional services such as hairdressing and podiatry are also available.

The report highlights good standards of dignity, privacy, hygiene, and safety. Rooms are cleaned daily, security systems are in place, and healthcare support is accessible, with strong relationships noted with external professionals such as district nurses and therapists.

Feedback from residents was highly positive, with many expressing enjoyment of their stay and appreciation for the staff and environment. The visiting team concluded that Ruskin Lodge provides high-quality, person-centred respite care and is continually striving to improve.

The main recommendation was for the provider to consider adding designated disabled parking bays. The provider responded positively to the report and committed to reviewing this suggestion while continuing to develop and enhance the service
