Healthwatch Westminster undertook an announced Enter and View visit to Garside House Nursing Home in November 2025. The purpose of the visit was to gather feedback from residents and staff, observe the care environment, and assess safeguarding practices, particularly in light of previous Care Quality Commission (CQC) concerns.
Garside House Nursing Home provides nursing care and accommodation for up to 64 older adults, including people living with dementia and those with complex or long‑term health conditions. During the visit, Healthwatch representatives spoke with five residents and four members of staff, reviewed safeguarding arrangements, and observed interactions, facilities, and accessibility within the home.
Overall, most residents reported positive experiences of care and said they felt safe, supported, and well treated by staff. Staff were observed interacting with residents in a calm, respectful, and friendly manner, demonstrating good knowledge of individual needs and preferences. The environment was found to be clean, well maintained, and appropriately adapted for residents with mobility needs.
Staff reported that they receive annual safeguarding training and felt confident in recognising and escalating concerns. They described management as approachable and supportive and believed that safeguarding concerns would be handled appropriately. Staffing levels were generally viewed as sufficient to keep residents safe and to provide good quality care.
The report noted clear improvements compared with earlier CQC inspections, which had previously identified serious safeguarding and care issues in 2019. Healthwatch found that safeguarding systems had been strengthened and that improvements reported by the CQC in 2022 appeared to have been maintained.
However, the report also identified some areas for improvement. Two of the five residents spoken to were not clear about the formal procedures for reporting abuse or harm, suggesting a need for clearer and more accessible information. Some residents reported feelings of isolation due to limited mobility or infrequent visitors. A small number of residents also commented that maintenance and repairs could take a long time to be completed.
Healthwatch Westminster recommended improving residents’ awareness of safeguarding and reporting processes, offering additional support to help less mobile residents engage in activities, and addressing delays in maintenance where possible. The provider was contacted for a response but did not submit one before the report was published.
