Summary of report content

Healthwatch Westminster undertook an enter and view visit to Beachcroft House Care Home on 6 June 2025 as part of its Enter and View programme, which aims to gather feedback from residents and staff and assess safeguarding, safety, and quality of care. The visit was announced and involved engagement with seven residents and three staff members, alongside observation of the care environment.

Beachcroft House is a modern care home in Westminster, registered to provide nursing and personal care for up to 84 older adults, including people living with dementia or physical disabilities. Although the Care Quality Commission’s last inspection in February 2021 rated the home as “requires improvement,” it also identified several areas of good practice, particularly around cleanliness, infection control, and resident satisfaction.

Management demonstrated a strong understanding of safeguarding responsibilities and described clear policies, reporting procedures, and regular staff training. Safeguarding concerns are addressed through structured escalation processes, regular supervision, audits, and involvement of residents’ families, which together contribute to a transparent and learning-focused culture.

During the visit, an example of effective safeguarding was shared involving an unexplained bruise on a resident, which was promptly investigated, reported to the local authority, and communicated to the family, with conclusions shared openly. More recently, the home also responded appropriately to a bedbug outbreak by isolating affected areas, engaging local authority pest control, and ensuring resident safety, demonstrating good environmental safeguarding practice.

Observations showed the home to be clean, modern, and well maintained, with friendly, respectful, and professional staff who interacted positively with residents. While a brief odour issue and a minor environmental incident were noted, both were dealt with promptly, and staffing levels appeared generally sufficient to meet residents’ needs.

Most residents stated that they felt safe in the home and believed staff would respond appropriately to concerns, although a small number were unsure about formal reporting processes. Some residents reported occasional loneliness, particularly at weekends, and suggested improvements such as more varied activities, clearer communication about routines, and greater choice around mealtimes.

Staff reported that safeguarding training adequately prepared them for their roles and that they had confidence in management’s responses to concerns. They suggested additional scenario-based training, improved digital documentation systems, and more staffing support during busy periods to further strengthen safeguarding practice.

The report concludes that Beachcroft House has a strong safeguarding culture under committed leadership, with clear procedures and positive relationships between staff and residents. Healthwatch Westminster made recommendations to improve resident awareness, activity provision, documentation, training, staffing resilience, and environmental safeguards, all of which the provider confirmed have been accepted and implemented.
