Summary of report content

Healthwatch County Durham gathered feedback from 24 residents, relatives, and staff at Acorn Grange to understand experiences of care, communication, the environment, and social engagement within the home. This work was undertaken to identify what is working well and where improvements could strengthen the quality, consistency, and sustainability of care. The research was carried out through conversations, observations, and feedback forms completed onsite.

Findings showed that Acorn Grange is viewed as warm, welcoming, and built on strong relationships. Communication emerged as a major strength, with residents and families describing staff as friendly, approachable, and reassuring—particularly for people living with dementia. Residents reported feeling safe, listened to, and “very happy.” Mealtimes, activities, and opportunities for social interaction were described positively, though staffing pressures sometimes affected routine tasks such as timely drink rounds. Staff feedback reflected a caring, person‑centred approach but also highlighted challenges including staffing shortages, reliance on agency workers, and concerns from staff on sponsorships about job security. The environment was seen as homely and comfortable, though practical limitations such as narrow doorways and recurring lift issues affect accessibility.

Recommendations focused on improving staffing stability, strengthening staff recognition and wellbeing support, addressing environmental challenges, expanding activities—particularly for residents with advanced dementia—and increasing family involvement. A provider response acknowledged staffing challenges and confirmed intention to continue sponsorships, though recommendation outcomes have not yet been implemented.
