Healthwatch Cheshire undertook an Enter & View visit to Oaklands Nursing Home on 26 January 2026, speaking with residents, relatives, and staff.
Overall, Healthwatch observed that Oaklands is a long‑established, family‑run home where leaders appeared invested and committed to providing good-quality care. The refurbishment programme has improved several areas, though some spaces—such as communal bathrooms and the salon—would benefit from better organisation and alternative storage solutions. Residents and families generally spoke positively about staff, describing them as kind, responsive, and supportive, and most were satisfied with the meals, with a suggestion to use food moulds to improve the appearance of soft‑diet dishes.
Some residents raised concerns about frequent call‑bell noise, and Healthwatch recommended considering a quieter or ‘silent’ system to reduce disturbance.
The Manager demonstrated strong clinical oversight and good relationships with GPs, external professionals, and the Hospital at Home service, though hospital discharge processes remained inconsistent, with incomplete documentation and late-day discharges creating challenges.
The home was praised for the friendliness and dedication of its staff team, the involvement of the family Directors, and its varied activities, including outings. Positive links with Chester University and Social Prescribing were also highlighted.
Additional suggestions included:
• Supporting residents who struggle to use mobile phones by offering assistance or access to the home’s phone.
• Reviewing call‑bell systems to manage noise more effectively.
What’s working well:
• Caring, approachable staff across all roles.
• Openness to feedback from families.
• Varied activities and community links.
